WhatsApp is the new email. Almost.

Three billion users. Ninety-five percent open rates. It sounds like email done right. Here is where the pitch stops and the reality begins.

The pitch is easy. WhatsApp has three billion active users. Open rates hit ninety five percent within minutes. Read receipts are on by default. Replies come back. If email is a broadcast into a void, WhatsApp is a conversation into an attentive room.

That is where the pitch stops and the reality begins. WhatsApp is not the new email. Not yet. And the ways it is not the new email are worth understanding before you build your program around it.

Opt in is a real thing here

Email accepted double opt in as a courtesy and dropped it whenever it was inconvenient. WhatsApp does not. Meta enforces opt in at the platform level. Your opt in flow is inspected. Your recipient list has to have provenance. Cold outbound to WhatsApp is a fast way to lose your Business Account.

Templates are prior restraint

You cannot send free form marketing on WhatsApp. Every marketing message ships as a template that Meta reviews first. Approval takes hours to days. Rejections are not always clear. Your creative pipeline needs a stage for Meta review that email pipelines never had.

Rate limits are a real thing here

WhatsApp has quality ratings, tier limits, and hard caps that email does not. You do not go from zero to a million subscribers in an evening. There is a warm up curve, and there is a quality bar you have to hold or the quota shrinks.

Cost is a real thing here

Email is functionally free at the margin. WhatsApp charges per conversation. That changes the entire economics of a lifecycle program. Every automation you would have built as a nudge in email becomes a business case in WhatsApp.

So no, WhatsApp is not going to replace email. It is going to sit alongside it. What is worth doing is building a discipline that treats them as different channels with different rules, different economics, and different failure modes. Copying an email calendar into WhatsApp is how you burn a Business Account.

The two channels rhyme. They do not equal. That difference is where the interesting work lives.
